Four Run Eighth Inning Keeps Griffins Alive in PSAC Tourney

Seton Hill used a four run eighth inning and the long ball throughout the game to survive and advance in the PSAC Tournament with a 9-6 victory over East Stroudsburg.  SHU improves to 38-15 overall on the season while ESU falls to 36-16.
 
The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.  Chris Miller singled after one out.  He moved to second on a two out single from Anthony FanelliMark Colella then came through with a two out RBI single to score Miller from second and give SHU a 1-0 lead.  SHU left a runner at third base in the second inning.  Tyler Sullivan doubled and moved up on a wild pitch with one out but two strikeouts ended the inning.
 
East Stroudsburg tied the game at one in the top of the third inning after they led off the inning with two hits and scored on a sacrifice fly.  The Griffins added two runs in the third inning.  Chris Miller doubled to lead off the inning.  He stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zac HeideAnthony Fanelli followed with a solo homer to right to give SHU a 3-1 lead. 
 
The Warriors answered the Griffins runs with three of their own to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth.  ESU started the inning with four straight hits, scoring three times.  Griffin reliever Kevin Neumann ended the inning with a spectacular snag of a line drive, starting a double play. 
 
East Stroudsburg added a run in the fifth with a two out RBI single.  SHU trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff homer over the Sheetz sign in left center field by Colella.  SHU tied the score at five with a leadoff homer by Garret Vrbanic in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Griffins left two runners on.  ESU took advantage of a leadoff walk in the eighth to retake the lead at 6-5.    
 
The eighth inning was a huge inning for the Griffins as they scored four runs to take a 9-6 lead.  Colton Carney led off the inning with a single.  Tyler Sullivan was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Sam Mattei then executed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. Vrbanic then singled thru the right side to score Carney and tie the game at six.  Matt Malacane then beat out a double play ball which allowed Sullivan to score and give SHU a 7-6 lead.  Malacane stole second and Miller was hit by a pitch.  Back to back singles from Heide and Fanelli extended the Griffins lead to 9-6. 
 
Jesse Cooper was able to throw a 1-2-3 ninth inning as he got three ground outs to end the game and keep the Griffins alive. 
 
Joe Shaffer earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 innings of work.  He allowed 1 run on 3 hits.  Cooper earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
 
Heide and Fanelli led the Griffins with 3 hits each.  Miller, Colella, and Vrbanic each added two hits in the win.  Heide, Fanelli, Colella and Vrbanic each added two RBI. 
 
Seton Hill will next take on West Chester in another elimination game this afternoon.  The Griffins must defeat the Golden Rams twice to advance to the PSAC championship game.
