Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Start Costs Griffins at Mercyhurst

Seton Hill made the trip to Mercyhurst on Wednesday evening looking to clinch a PSAC playoff spot with a victory over the Lakers.  SHU will have to wait until Saturday to clinch a playoff spot following a 75-60 loss to the Lakers.  SHU drops to .500 overall at 13-13 and 9-11 in PSAC action while Mercyhurst improves to 13-13 overall and 11-9 in PSAC play.

After the Lakers hit a three to open the game, SHU got baskets from Jharrin Gill and Mariah Wells to take an early 4-3 lead.  That would be the only lead the Griffins would hold as the Lakers would hit five three pointers in the first quarter to take a 24-10 lead after one quarter of action.

Mercyhurst continued its hot shooting from three point land as their first two made field goals in the second quarter were three pointers as the Lakers built their lead to 30-14 midway through the second quarter.  The Lakers held a 36-18 advantage at the halftime break.

The Lakers scored the first five points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 41-18.  Gill hit a jumper and Jenna Kaufman drilled a three to get those five points right back.  The Lakers hit a jumper to take a 43-23 lead with 6:42 to play in the quarter.  The Griffins would then go on a 19-4 run to close out the quarter and cut the Lakers lead to 47-42 at the end of the third quarter.  Kaufman led the Griffins with 11 points in the quarter.

Chrisanna Green opened the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Griffins as they cut the Laker lead to three points.  Alexandra Hay answered a Hurst basket and SHU trailed 49-46 with 7:31 to play in the fourth quarter.  That would be as close as the Griffins would get as the Lakers then went on an 8-1 run to take control of the contest.  The Griffins would get no closer than eight points the rest of the contest.

SHU shot 39% from the floor and just 18% from three point land compared to 49% for the Lakers from the floor and 53% from three point land.  The Lakers outrebounded the Griffins 35-31.

Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 16 points.  Jharrin Gill also reached double figures with 10 points.  Lindsey Mifsud added 8 points and Mariah Wells finished the game with 7 points.

SHU will look to clinch the PSAC playoff spot on Saturday when they head to Edinboro for a PSAC West contest.
