Box Score Seton Hill looked to continue to avoid elimination in the PSAC Baseball Championships in Butler, PA on Friday evening as they took on undefeated East Stroudsburg in the nightcap on Day 3 of the tourney. The Griffins continued to survive and advance in the tourney with an exciting 11-7 win. SHU improves to 42-10 overall.
East Stroudsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a line drive solo homer to right field. The Griffins tied the score at one in the top of the second inning.
Chris Miller doubled to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a
Logan Urtz groundout and scored on a sac fly from
Cody Herald. The Griffins took the lead in the top of the third inning.
Taylor Schmidt drew a one out walk. He stole second and scored when
Pat McCarthy doubled to the right center field gap.
Garret Vrbanic then had an infield single and
Nick Sell drove in McCarthy with a sac fly to right to give SHU a 3-1 lead.
The Warriors picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Griffins lead in half at 3-2. SHU answered with 4 runs in the top of the fifth.
Zac Heide led off the inning with a walk. Schmidt singled and McCarthy was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force an ESU pitching change. Vrbanic then greated the new pitcher with a bases clearing double to left center field. Sell followed with an RBI single to score Vrbanic and give SHU the 7-2 lead. SHU added an unearned run in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 8-2. ESU sends 11 players to the plate and scores 5 runs to trim the SHU lead to 8-7 after 8 innings of action. Urtz was able to get a strikeout and a lineout to left to leave the bases loaded. SHU added insurance runs in the ninth. Vrbanic drew a leadoff walk. He scored when Sell tripled off the center field wall. After a strikeout, Urtz doubled in Sell to increase the lead to 10-7.
Matt Malacane then came thru with a huge two out RBI single to increase the lead to 11-7 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Garret Vrbanic and
Nick Sell each had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs.
Chris Miller and
Matt Malacane each added two hits.
Zach Martinelli earned his 7
th win of the season.
Logan Urtz earned the save.
SHU will take on East Stroudsburg at 11 AM tomorrow morning with the winner to take on Millersville in the PSAC Championship Game.
