Box Score Seton Hill opened PSAC Tournament play on Wednesday afternoon when they battled the #3 seed from the east Shippensburg in the first round of the tournament. The Griffins won their first ever PSAC Tournament game with an 11-5 victory over the Raiders. SHU improves to 40-9 on the season. Its the fourth straight season the Griffin program has won 40 games.
Shippensburg jumped on starter
Brett Sullivan for two runs in the top of the first inning. Ship drew a leadoff walk and made it 2-0 with a homer over the right field fence. The Griffins got on the board in the bottom of the second. After two outs,
Matt Malacane doubled to the left center field gap. He scored when
Zac Heide singled thru the right side of the infield.
Pat McCarthy then tripled down the right field line to score Heide and tie the score at 2. McCarthy scored when
Garret Vrbanic reached on an error to give SHU the 3-2 lead.
Nick Sell homered to lead off the third inning and give the Griffins the 4-2 lead. The Raiders hit a two out solo homer in the top of the fourth inning to trim the lead to 4-3.
Anthony Fanelli led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to straight away left field. Sell then singled thru the left side of the infield and
Cody Herald drew a walk. After a wild pitch,
Logan Urtz singled to right to score Sell and give SHU the 6-3 lead forcing a Shippensburg pitching change.
Chris Miller greeted the new pitcher with a hard hit double to the left center field gap that scored two runs and gave the Griffins an 8-3 lead. McCarthy added another run with a single to left that scored Miller. Shippensburg got a run back with a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 9-4. Urtz got that run back and one more with a two run homer to left center that score Herald and pushed the SHU lead to 11-4. Shippensburg scored once in the top of the ninth but it was not enough.
Brett Sullivan earned the win on the mound. He went 7 innings, giving up 4 runs, 2 earned on 5 hits.
Logan Urtz led the Griffins offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI.
Nick Sell and
Pat McCarthy each added two hits. Sell reached base four times as he drew two walks as well.
Seton Hill advances in the tournament and will face the winner of the California / Millersville contest at 6:30 PM on Thursday.
