Comeback Kids!!!! Griffins Survive and Advance in PSAC Tournament

In a match that will go do down in the ranks of lore here at Seton Hill University, the Griffins volleyball team turned into the comeback kids as they rallied in the PSAC Quarterfinal for a 3-2 victory.  Things looked bleak as the Griffins were down 2-0 but the team would not let the crowd go home unhappy.  Seton Hill rallied to win the final three sets and send the crowd into a frenzy as they outlasted Gannon to advance to the PSAC Semifinals.  With Cal upsetting #1 seed Clarion, the Griffins will host the PSAC semifinals and finals this Saturday and Sunday.  SHU improves to 30-4 on the season while the Knights fall to 24-6. 

Gannon came out of the gates flying, taking a quick 6-1 lead.  SHU battled back to tie the set at 7.  Gannon retook a 13-9 lead but three straight kills from Corrine Gahagen cut the Knights lead to 13-12.  The Knights were able to extend their lead to 20-14.  A kill from Gahagen and an ace from Cassie Hausfeld trimmed the lead to 23-20 but the Knights took the first set by a 25-21 score.  Kills from Gahagen and Abigail Malsch gave SHU a 6-4 lead in the second set.  Gannon fought back and took a 10-8 lead.  An ace from Shelby Kyllo and a kill from Gahagen put SHU back in the lead 13-12.  Gannon then ran off 4 straight to take a 16-13 lead.  Back to back kills from Gahagen tied the set at 17.  Gannon led 21-19 but the Griffins tied the set at 21.  The Knights then took a 23-21 lead.  A Hausfeld kill and Kyllo block cut the Knights lead to 24-23 but Gannon took the second set 25-23. 

Seton Hill came out guns a blazing in the third set and took a 9-4 lead.  Gannon responded with a 6-0 run to take a 10-9 lead.  Kyllo tied the set at 11 with a kill.  The Knights took a 14-12 lead before kills from Gahagen and Malsch tied the set at 15.  Hausfeld then caught fire with three kills to put SHU up 20-18.  Kyllo then followed with a kill to put SHU up 23-18.  Hausfeld followed to make it 23-20 and two Gannon hitting errors gave SHU the third set by the score of 25-20.  Gahagen started the fourth set with three kills to take an early 4-1 lead.  GU stormed back and took a 9-5 lead.  SHU then responded and went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-9 lead.  Malsch and Kyllo had kills to put SHU up 17-13.  A Knights block cut the SHU lead to 18-16.  Gahagen, Malsch and Kyllo had kills to give SHU a 21-17 lead forcing a GU timeout.  Kyllo made it 24-19 and Hausfeld closed out the set with a kill, giving SHU a 25-19 win and tying the match at two sets apiece.

Two kills from Gahagen gave SHU an early 2-1 lead in the fifth set.  Gahagen and Courtney Field combined on a block and SHU led 4-1.  Malsch followed with a kill and a Knights service error gave SHU a 6-3 lead.  A kill from Kyllo pushed the lead to 7-3, forcing the Knights to take a timeout.  A GU service error had SHU ahead 8-5 at the change of ends.  Hausfeld followed the change with a kill and SHU led 9-5.  A stuff block from Kyllo gave SHU a 10-6 lead.  GU then rolled off three straight to trim the lead to 10-9.  Field and Kyllo then teamed on a block to give SHU an 11-9 lead.  A Field kill and SHU was three points away at 12-9, and the Knights used their last timeout.  Two kills from Gahagen and SHU was at match point, leading 14-11.  After a Knights point, Malsch put a kill to the floor, sending the crowd onto the court to celebrate with the team as Seton Hill took the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.  You can watch the final point here, courtesy of Brandon Jossey

Corrine Gahagen led the Griffins with 23 kills.  She also added 10 digs.  Cassie Hausfeld added 14 kills and 25 digs.  Shelby Kyllo added 13 kills and 5 blocks.  Abigail Malsch had 12 kills and 26 digs.  Lauren Teed led the Griffins with 27 digs.  Courtney Field had 53 assists and 11 digs.

Seton Hill will now host #4 seed out of the east Shippensburg in one of the semifinals on Saturday at 6:30 PM.  California and West Chester will meet in the other semifinal at 4 PM with the two winners to meet at 12 PM on Sunday.
